Christmas is around the corner, and gift shopping is in full swing. But not all presents are created equal! Some gifts are just plain awful. Whether it’s outdated tech, ill-fitting clothes, or those dreaded generic gift cards, these are the presents you don’t want to give.
Let’s dive into the absolute worst Christmas gifts to avoid this year. Trust me, your loved ones will thank you!
Worst Christmas Gifts To Give In 2024

Unsolicited Self-Help Books: Giving someone a self-help book they didn’t ask for can come off as presumptuous and imply that you think they need improvement.
What to give instead: Book’s are fantastic gifts. Instead of a self help book that may give someone the wrong idea opt for a Best Seller like these that are highly rated!
Outdated Tech Gadgets: Giving someone last year’s model of a smartphone, tablet, or gadget might not be appreciated, especially if there have been significant updates.
What to give instead: Instead of giving a phone or tablet that might be outdated (unless they give you specific instructions on what to buy) try Apple headphones, a charging station, or Amazon echo 2024 release.
Cheap or Generic Gift Cards: A gift card from a store that the recipient rarely shops at, or one with a low value, can feel impersonal and thoughtless.
What to give instead: What does everyone need? Food and Gas. In this economy a grocery store gift card would be appreciated. Or a gas station gift card (if they have electric car you can get them charging points). If you know they like to order food Doordash and Ubereats are great options too.
Worst Gifts To Give
Clothing in the Wrong Size: Guessing someone’s size can lead to awkward situations. If you get it wrong, it could either offend them or leave them with something they can’t use.
What to give instead: I like to opt for Beauty over Fashion. These are the most popular beauty items right now!
Pets: Gifting a pet without discussing it with the recipient first is a bad idea. Pets require a lot of care and responsibility, which might not be welcomed.
What to give instead: If they love animals create a pet themed gift box. Add a dog mug, fun socks, and pet themed gifts.
Generic Holiday-Themed Items: Things like generic Christmas decorations, themed dish towels, or mugs with Santa’s face can be overly seasonal and not very useful after the holidays.
What to give instead: Opt for a home decor gift they can use all year. Personally, I love giving candle warmer lamps. They are amazing and people are really impressed when they receive one.
Impractical or Inconvenient Experiences: Gifting an experience, like a weekend getaway or a cooking class, that doesn’t align with the recipient’s schedule or interests can become more of a hassle than a gift.
What to give instead: I do love the gift of experiences but unless you know the person really well it’s better to talk about this ahead of time. You can decide not to give each other gifts and opt to plan an experience together!
Remember it’s the thought that counts. Don’t stress yourself or your budget over a gift. This is just a guideline and do what’s best for you and your wallet.
