Cost per wear is the formula every shopper needs to know. It’s what I use to decide on a new purchase and how I determine if a past purchase is worth it. Don’t worry, the math isn’t that complicated!
So what is cost per wear? It’s taking the price of the item (let’s say you bought a $100 dress) and dividing it by the amount of times you wore it (let’s say you wore it 5 times) which means the cost per wear is $20.
A fantastic cost per wear is when you can get a negative balance. Let’s say you buy those $800 Stuart Weitzman boots but over the past 3 years wore them 922 times, that’s a NEGATIVE cost per wear which is a great thing. That’s why for me, shoes and handbags are great investments. I wear them so much that it’s worth the expense.

How to Maximize your wardrobe with cost per wear
- When trying an item in stores think of at least 5 different ways/places you can wear the item
- Look at the most expensive items in your closet. Calculate their cost per wear. This will give you a good idea whether you are making good purchasing decisions on expensive pieces.
- Less is more. The less items you own the more likely you will wear them. This will increase your cost per wear and get you to that negative balance.
- Think of your top 5 most worn items. Calculate their cost per wear. Aim for more items to be in that range.
Designer items
Designer items are a higher ticket item so it will take longer to have a cost per wear in the negative balance. However, this is a good indication that you love your designer items if you wear them all the time.
If you notice you wear your designer items a lot than you are doing a great job with cost per wear! If you rarely use your designer items, ask yourself why. Are you afraid to ruin the item? Are you nervous people will judge you? (Why no one should judge you for buying designer handbags. ) Or maybe you are waiting for a special occasion. Figure out what’s holding you back and make a concerted effort to love and wear your designer pieces.
Maximize your wardrobe with these 5 tips
- It’s better to buy something you really love that’s expensive than a bunch of cheaper alternatives. You will still want the expensive item.
- It’s not that complicated to afford designer clothes. Here’s how.
